No es ninguna novedad que la década del ´80 marcó a toda una generación, en gran medida gracias a series y películas que se han convertido en clásicos. Dentro de éstas es imposible desconocer a El Auto Fantástico como una de las más incónicas.

Aquel Pontiac inteligente e indestructible que utilizaba Michael Knight se traducía en un milagro tecnológico sobre ruedas. Los visionarios ideadores del show se adelantaron a su época y soñaron con un vehículo sobre el que recién muchos años después podría pensarse seriamente como factible de construir. Y si a un buen show lo acompaña una buena cortina musical, se logra sin duda un mix inmejorable para calar en lo mas hondo del sentimiento del espectador. Pasó en este caso, al igual que con Volver al Futuro, Rocky y muchas otras.

Como buen clásico, Knight Rider cosechó un inmenso número de fans alrededor del mundo. Nate Anderson es uno de los más representativos. Este fotógrafo profesional de Minneapolis es un vivo ejemplo de lo que se puede lograr con determinación y perseverancia. Tiene miles de seguidores en su cuenta de Instagram @knight_rider_fans, pero más destacable sin duda alguna es la réplica de KITT que descansa en su cochera.

A través de esta entrevista te invitamos a conocer su historia y la de cómo llegó a materializar ese sueño de tantos.

¿Qué factor hizo que te convirtieses en fan de la serie?

¿Cómo y cuándo nace knight_rider_fans? 

Es una historia divertida. Lo recuerdo claramente. Esto fue mucho antes de que soñara con construir mi propia réplica de KITT. Solo era un gran fanático del programa y siempre buscaba fotos del auto, cualquier noticia sobre un posible reboot y visitaba sitios web que tenían información sobre el programa y otras réplicas de los fanáticos. Estaba sentado en el sofá viendo mi cuenta personal de Instagram, buscando fotos del show... Entonces me percaté de que no había ninguna cuenta que tuviera buen contenido del programa o de los creadores de réplicas. Pensé que con tantos fanáticos del programa en todo el mundo, si me tomara el tiempo todos los días para publicar una foto que tuviera una conexión interesante, esos fans encontrarían un lugar para detenerse todos los días y disfrutar un poco. La página creció rápidamente. Me sorprendió el apoyo y el interés de la gente. Rápidamente crecimos y llegamos a miles de seguidores. Es increíble. Recibo mensajes todos los días de fans que quieren que publique su foto, comparta una historia sobre lo que el programa significó para ellos o simplemente me saludan y me agradecen por publicar. Knight Rider llegó a público de todas las edades, en todo el mundo. Yo solo deseaba crear un lugar para que los fanáticos visitaran y se conectasen más de cerca con el programa. 

En tu cochera tenés una répilica exacta de KITT. Contanos como fue el proceso para llegar a materializar ese sueño.

 El sueño realmente comenzó cuando visité una exhibición de autos hace unos años que albergaba 3 autos originales que se usaron para el show. Me comuniqué con Joe Huth, que es parte del equipo de Knight Rider Historians. El participaba en la organización y montaje de la exhibición. Le dije que estaba interesado en asistir y le consulté si necesitaban a alguien que tomara fotos profesionales del evento. A el le encantó la idea y antes de que me diera cuenta, mi esposa y yo estábamos conduciendo de Minnesota a Indiana. ¡Estaba tan emocionado! Hasta ese momento, nunca había visto a KITT tan de cerca. Había asistido unas cuantas veces a exhibiciones de autos, pero en ninguna de ellas pude acercarme y conocer personalmente los vehículos. Allí, conocí a otros fanáticos. Fue una experiencia maravillosa hablar y escuchar a algunos miembros del programa original, incluido un productor y un miembro del equipo de transporte. La mayor emoción fue conocer a Michael Scheffe, quien diseñó el interior y el morro delantero de KITT. Este tipo es como un dios para muchos de nosotros. Hablar con él sobre el programa fue fascinante. Descubrí que es una persona muy sencilla, a la que le encantaba el hecho de que el programa hubiese tenido el impacto que tuvo en tanta gente. Fue entonces esa exhibición de autos de Knight Rider lo que me llevó a pensar que sería posible tener mi propio KITT. Conocí a otro propietario de réplicas en la feria, su nombre es Chad. Nos llevamos bien de inmediato. Tiene un hermoso exponente de la temporada 4, que es la misma temporada que yo quería hacer. Intercambiamos información y él se convirtió en una especie de mentor del que pude obtener información invaluable sobre lo que se debe y no se debe hacer durante el proceso. Somos grandes amigos hasta el día de hoy, aunque yo estoy en Minnesota y él en Indiana. Primero, di con un Pontiac Firebird... Fue un hallazgo en un antiguo granero en Ohio que encontré en línea. Lo mandé a traer aquí a Minnesota y poco a poco comencé a acumular piezas que necesitaba para mi armarlo. Me dijeron que no apresurara la construcción... Las piezas no serían fáciles de hallar . Fui paciente y busqué siempre artículos de calidad. Después de 3 años, mi KITT está completo en un 90% ¡Solo estoy trabajando en el cableado del tablero y ya estará listo! Tengo que agradecer a mi esposa por creer en este sueño y todas las horas que me ha soportado "jugando" en la cochera. 

¿Has participado en eventos con tu KITT?

 He participado en algunas exhibiciones y desfiles. Adoro ver la impresión en los los rostros de las personas. Incluso en los niños más pequeños; les encanta el escáner y el tablero ... Creo que tendremos una nueva generación de fanáticos de Knight Rider. 

¿Has tenido la oportunidad de conocer a David Hasselhoff o algún otro actor del show?

Al único que conocí en persona fue a William Daniels, la voz de KITT. Fue durante un Comic-Con en Seattle. Tengo varios artículos firmados por él, incluyendo un volante y una lonchera. Me tomé un par de fotos con él y todo lo que puedo decir es que es una gran persona. Muy amable con todos los fans. Sin dudas entiende lo que el programa significó para la gente. El año pasado, para mi 40 cumpleaños, mi esposa y mejores amigos obtuvieron de el y de David Hasselhoff saludos para mi. ¡¡Fue increíble !! ¡Conservaré esos mensajes para siempre! Fue un regalo asombroso. 

Durante todos estos años creemos que construiste una colección muy grande de artículos relacionados con la serie. ¿Tenés idea cuántos? ¿Y cuáles son para vos los más importantes? 

He acumulado muchos recuerdos de Knight Rider en los últimos años. Traigo mucho de eso conmigo a las exhibiciones de autos para compartir con los fanáticos. Me encanta que KITT todavía haga sonreír a la gente. Ese es el objetivo con la página de Instagram y de mi réplica ... Las reacciones que obtienes de la gente son un sentimiento cálido. Me encanta intentar mantener vivo el sueño de Knight Rider.

The visionary creators of the show were ahead of their time and dreamed of a vehicle that only many years later could seriously be factible to build. And if a good show is accompanied by a good musical curtain, an unbeatable mix is ​​undoubtedly achieved to penetrate the depths of the viewer's feeling. It happened in this case, as with Back to the Future, Rocky and many others.

As a good classic, Knight Rider had gained  a huge number of fans around the world. Nate Anderson is one of the most representative ones. This professional photographer of Minneapolis is a living example of what can be achived with determination and perseverance. He has thousands of followers on his Instagram account @knight_rider_fans, but the most remarkable is the KITT replica that is parked in his garage.Through this interview we invite you to know his story and how he came to materialize that dream of so many.

What factor made you become fan of the show?

I was born in 1980... I'm probably not sure what I was watching when I was 2 years old in 1982, when Knight Rider debuted. My mom always told me I would always be excited when the opening of the show came on. I'm sure the music and unforgettable scanner made an impression on me. We would eventually start taping the shows, also recording reruns that would later start on the USA Network. I think my obsession for the show only grew after it went off the air. I was a little older and could really understand all the action going on in the show. The idea of a car that could talk and drive by itself was magical for me as a child.

How and when was knight_rider_fans born?

It's a funny little story on how the page started. I remember it clearly. This was well before I ever dreamt of building my own KITT replica. I was just a huge fan of the show and would always look up photos of KITT, any news on a possible Knight Rider reboot, and visit websites that had any information on the show or other fans replicas. I was sitting on the couch on my personal Instagram account and was searching for Knight Rider photos... I noticed there wasn't any accounts that consistently had content from the show or replica builders. I thought with so many fans of the show, worldwide, if I took time every day to post one photo that would have some interesting connection to the show, fans might have a place to stop every day and get a little joy. The page snowballed fast. I was surprised of the support and interest the page gained. Quickly we grew to 1k fans, then 5k, and it just kept growing. We now have almost 50k followers! It's incredible. I get messages every day from fans wanting me to post their photo, share a story on what the show meant to them, or just gave me a hello to thank me for posting. Knight Rider reaches to fans of all ages, all over the world. Again, I just wanted to create a spot for fans to go and get some smiles on a show they feel a connection too.

In your garage you have an exact KITT replica. Tell us how was the process to achieve that dream

The dream really started when I visited a car show a few years back that was hosting 3 cars that were used in the original Knight Rider Show. I reached out to Joe Huth, who's half of the Knight Rider Historians team. Joe was a part of organizing and putting the car show together. I told Joe I was interested in coming to the show and if he needed someone to take professional photos of the cars and other replicas there, I would be happy to do it. Joe thought that was a great idea and before I knew it my wife and I were driving from Minnesota to Indiana to see some KITT replica cars! I was so excited! Till that point, I had never really seen KITT up close. A few times at car shows and things, but nothing where I could get up close and personal with the vehicles. While at the show, I met some of the nicest people. All were die-hard fans of the show. It was a wonderful experience talking and listening to a few members of the original show, including a producer and a member of the transportation crew. The biggest thrill was meeting Michael Scheffe, who designed KITT's interior and front nose. This guy is like a god to many of us, it was his vision of the famous interior of KITT. Talking with him about the show was fascinating. He's just an average guy that loves the fact the show made an impact on so many people.

It was that Knight Rider car show that made me realize that I could have my own replica. I met another replica owner at the show, his name is Chad. We hit it off right away. He has a beautiful season 4 replica that is the same season that I wanted to do. We exchanged information and he became sort of a mentor or sorts that I could bounce questions from and get priceless information on the dos and don'ts of building KITT. We are great friends to this day even though I'm in Minnesota and he's in Indiana. First, I found a Pontiac Firebird... It was an old barn find in Ohio that I found online. I had it shipped here to Minnesota and slowly started accumulating parts that I needed for my replica. I was told not to rush the build... Parts become available from time to time. Stay patient and stick with buying quality parts. After 3 years my KITT is 90% complete... Just working on wiring up the dashboard and KITT will be ready to ride! I have to thank my wife for believing in this dream and all the hours out in the garage tinkering with the car.

Have you participated in events with your KITT?

I have been in a few car shows and parades with KITT. It always brings smiles to people's faces. Even the very young children love the scanner and dashboard... I think we will have a whole new generation of Knight Rider fans coming up.

Have you ever met David Hasselhoff or any another actor of the show?

The only on-screen person I have met was William Daniels. A couple years ago I flew to Seattle Comic-Con to meet William Daniels, voice of KITT. I had several items signed by him including a KITT gullwing and KR lunch box. I had a couple pictures taken with him and all I can say is, William was a class act! So nice to all the fans and I think he understands what the show meant to people. Last year for my 40th birthday my wife and best friends purchased a message separately from both David Hasselhoff and William Daniels on Cameo. It was awesome!! I will have those messages forever! It was an amazing gift.

During all these years we believe that you have built a great collection of articles related to the TV show. Do you have any idea how many of them you have? Which are the most important for you? 

I have accumulated a lot of Knight Rider memorabilia over the last few years. I bring a lot of it with me to car shows to share with fans. I love that KITT still brings smiles to people's faces. That's the goal with the Instagram page and my replica... The reactions you get from people are a warm feeling. I love trying to keep the dream of Knight Rider alive.
